Last Updated: Thursday, 16 February 2012

The Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC) welcomes the upcoming review of distance education, services and delivery in Alberta, as announced by Alberta Education on 7 February 2012.

According to ADLC Assistant Superintendent, Ray Battochio, the present focus on a vital area of Alberta's education delivery system is an affirmation that Alberta Education considers distance education to be a key component for the delivery of high quality, engaging 21st century learning for Alberta students.

"Alberta Distance Learning looks forward to defining our unique value as a key collaborative partner for all Alberta school jurisdictions, with a significant impact on rural Alberta and FNMI students through the delivery of distance education."

One example of Alberta Distance Learning's collaboration with rural and remote schools is a partnership with Northland School Division:

"Through the creation of a virtual school, Alberta Distance Learning will connect Northland teachers with ADLC staff, provide access to learning resources for Northland's teachers, and allow students the freedom to transition to other locations while still maintaining their education."

A number of key initiatives have been undertaken by Alberta Distance Learning within the last year to ensure the organization continues to meet the current and evolving educational needs of Alberta students.  These include:

·         An external review of the organization by Dr. Jim Brandon, which is available for download on our website, www.adlc.ca.

·         Taking the first steps in the establishment of an External Advisory Council.

·         Engaging in discussions with Alberta Education regarding our education service model and business model.

In the meantime, the Alberta Distance Learning Centre will continue to offer customized, personalized learning programs and services to all of its partner students, school authorities, schools and communities across Alberta.
