What changed?

In June 2018, the Pembina Hills School Board approved a recommendation for changes to the ADLC calendar, starting in the 2018/19 school year.

ADLC teachers will begin their school year as determined by the Pembina Hills Public Schools (PHPS) Calendar.  The rest of the ADLC teachers’ work year is designed to match high and low rates of submissions and contacts with teachers.

ADLC 2018/19 School Year – started on August 29, 2018 and ends on July 5, 2019.

  • Holiday Break – Based on information regarding assignment submissions and students’ contacts with teachers, the best placement for the first 5-day non-working block is the week prior to the December holiday break.
  • Spring Break – The second 5-day block will take place during the PHPS Spring break.  This year, Spring Break is March 25-29, 2019.  Again, while teachers will be away, ADLC support staff will continue to be available.
  • Summer 2019 – ADLC administration will determine the staffing needed between July 8, 2019 and the beginning of the  2019/20 school year based on the number of extension requests that are processed by May 15th. Our previous experience is that student productivity generally declines during the summer months. We encourage partners and students to complete courses by June 30th. Granting course extensions into the summer is contingent on schools being able to provide local supports for their students.

Why change ADLC’s calendar?

  • After consideration of the feedback we received from many of our partner schools and of our goals to increase course completions and improve efficiency, we adjusted the student registration period  beginning with the 2018/19 school year. This led to the changes to the ADLC calendar.
  • It’s important to note that in the past, we had contract markers providing assessment services during periods such as holiday breaks. Changing to a one-teacher model has allowed our teachers to perform all assessments and to monitor student learning more closely; however, this means that assessment during holiday breaks is no longer available. With the exception of traditional and statutory holidays, ADLC’s support staff will continue to be available year-round. We are committed to student success and will continue asking for constructive feedback from our partners.

Holiday Schedule: ADLC Teachers will be away on holiday break beginning December 17, 2018 and will return January 7, 2019. Coursework will not be assessed until teachers return after the break.
