Welcome to reading! This course for new readers is based on the Alberta curriculum and follows a Balanced Literacy format. The course has three main components:

  • Guided Reading: Students will learn how to read based on their current level of knowledge and comfort. Students are expected to move through two to three colour levels in any given year.
  • Writing Traits: Once students have learned their letter sounds and are beginning to sound out full sentences, they’ll learn about conventions, word choice, organization, sentence fluency, ideas, and voice.
  • Read-Aloud: Students’ parents or caregivers will read popular children’s literature to them.

Note: Personalized learning is available for this course.

      The Grade 1 English Language Arts program follows the Alberta’s curriculum and a Balanced Literacy format.   This program has four main components:

      • Guided Reading: This component follows the new Key Links Literacy from Nelson with a colour-coded, levelled reading program that places students at the reading level they are currently at, regardless of grade. There are nine levels: Magenta, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange, Turquoise, Purple, and Gold.  Students are expected to move through two to three colour levels in any given year.
      • Writing Traits: There are six writing traits that work on specific writing skills: Conventions, Ideas, Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Word Choice. These traits are started after students know their letters sounds and are beginning to create independent sentences.
      • Phonics: The Grade 1 program uses a Phonics book from Modern Curriculum Press to teach additional reading skills, including phonemic awareness, short and long vowels, consonant blends, ending digraphs, and contractions.
      • Read-Aloud: The Read Aloud component includes a package of ten books, each with lessons and student workbook pages.

      Note: For those parents/facilitators who don’t wish to purchase print materials, the following files can be downloaded in PDF form from ADLC’s secure website: Key Links levelled reading materials (Facilitator and Student packages) and Read-Aloud materials (Facilitator and Student packages).

      The Key Links levelled readers, Read-Aloud Book Package, and the Consumable Resource Package are all required for student work.
